Tasmanian Youth Story

Tasmanian Youth Story

Entered by Brand Tasmania

Only 53 per cent of young Tasmanians graduated from grade 12 in 2022, far below the national average. Attendance has fallen since the pandemic. Historically, Tasmanians have been mocked, misunderstood, and underestimated by mainland Australians and even by their neighbours, which has led to a lack of pride, confidence, and aspiration. The economic, social, and cultural consequences are heartbreaking.

In research, both in Tasmania and abroad, the plight of young people in Tasmania is highlighted as a major concern. Tasmanians worry about the next generation, and potential migrants to Tasmania worry about their children's prospects.
